System software refers to all programs related to coordinating computer operations, including the operating system, programming language translators, and service programs.

An operating system is a set of programs that lies between application software and the computer hardware.

The supervisor program, most of which remains in memory, is called resident. The supervisor controls the entire operating system and loads into memory nonresident operating system programs from disk storage as needed.

An operating system has three main functions:
1- to manage the computer's resources, such as the central processing unit, memory, disk drives, and printers,
2- to establish a user interface,
3- to exceute and provide services for application software.

Loading the operating system into memory is called booting the system.
